Our History
We are a local, family-run business established in Sutton-in-Ashfield in 1976, although our roots as coal merchants can be traced back to 1902 when Mrs.Eleanor Syson (Roger's Grandmother) began supplying coal from her premises in Kirkby-in-Ashfield to the local area.
Some time around the 1920's Maurice Syson (Roger's father) took over the business from his mother, and moved location to Stuart Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield where he expanded the business, delivering coal by horse & cart to the local families for many years to come.
Roger continued to expand the business from the yard in Stuart Street in 1976, moving location 4 years later to our current site at Byron Avenue, gradually developing the yard as it is today.
Therefore, our customers can rest assured that we provide a service that has been relied upon by generations of people in our area for over 100 years.
In December 2011, we became NOTTINGHAMSHIRE'S ONLY DIPLOMA APPROVED COAL MERCHANTS, a status only given to Approved Merchants who offer an "all round" service to their customers.
We are a DIPLOMA APPROVED COAL MERCHANT, as part of the Approved Coal Merchant Scheme operated by the Coal Merchants Federation.
